The birth of civilisation on earth

One popular New Age idea is that the sudden emergence of civilisations in Egypt, Sumeria and India around 3,000BC couldn't have occured spontaneously. There must have been outside help, and the consensus is that that help came from somewhere near the star Sirius. Aliens who wanted either to exploit us or to raise us up to their hyper-advanced level of consciousness came to teach the primitive earthlings how to take the first steps along this difficult path. They taught us how to write and how to build impressive monuments like the pyramids - monuments whose design and location contain clues as to who our real ancestors were.

One snag with this line of argument is that if the guys in Egypt, Sumeria and India couldn't figure out how to do these things for themselves, how were the aliens able to do it on their planet when they were back at a similar stage of development? Did they have to have outside help too?
